Open to all 8th grade students in Louisiana

Requirements:
500 words or less
Typed, 10-point Times New Roman
Essays will be judged on spelling, grammar, content, and how well the student answers the question:
"Why did Lou Gehrig consider himself 'The Luckiest Man?'"
Legendary New York Yankee Lou Gehrig was diagnosed with ALS in the prime of his record-setting baseball career. Through it all, Gehrig presented a public face of courage, perseverance and humility. The winning essay will highlight both Gehrig and ALS, which ultimately became known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

First prize: $100
Second prize: $50
Third prize: $25

Winners will be presented at the Louisiana State Capitol on ALS Awareness Day -- May 15, 2014

Join The ALS Association Louisiana-Mississippi Chapter and the New Orleans Zephyrs on Friday, June 6 to Strike Out ALS. We'll be raising awareness of ALS while commemorating the 75th anniversary of Lou Gehrig's farewell speech at Yankee Stadium. June 6 is also Military Appreciation Night at Zephyr Field.
 
Did you know that military veterans are twice as likely to be diagnosed with ALS?
Help us fight for them as well as others living with the disease. Tickets for the game are $12 -- and half of the ticket sales will benefit The ALS Association Louisiana-Mississippi Chapter and its mission to provide help and hope to those fighting ALS. *Tickets for pALS and one caregiver are available at no charge, sponsored by The ALS Association Louisiana-Mississippi Chapter. Please RSVP by going through the ticket-purchasing process to indicate that you will be joining us and we will mail your tickets to you.
